from Haiti: April 30

Well, friends, I have arrived in Haiti! I left Ft. Wayne yesterday afternoon and arrived here this morning. I had a smooth trip with no delays (!) and was even able to spend time with a friend in Miami last night. When I arrived at the Port-au-Prince airport this morning, I was greeted by Patrick, a Haitian friend who works at the US Embassy. He took care of all my paperwork and had me sit in an upstairs lounge while people got my checked luggage for me. Certainly the VIP treatment, and I definitely didn’t miss waiting through the lines and trying to retrieve luggage! God was very good and gave me a smooth trip; I arrived here at God’s Littlest Angels (GLA) around 10 (that’s 11 Eastern, because Haiti doesn’t do daylight savings time they’re basically on central time now) with no problems. I did get the chance to talk with Patrick while I was at the airport and I was asking him about the riots that have been in the news so much lately. He said that things have calmed down, but that even when it was bad it wasn’t really as bad as the media portrayed. A friend of his had been in Cite Soleil and hadn’t seen anything like what they were showing on tv. The news always likes the sensational story and while it may be true it often isn’t the whole story or an accurate portrayal of the situation.

The rest of this week I will primarily be adjusting to my new surroundings and getting familiar with things: unpacking, getting settled, spending time with the kids, as well as helping with a few odd jobs. Next week I will begin learning the responsibilities of my new job. The guy who has been doing my job will be here for another couple of months, so hopefully there should be a smooth transition and I will have plenty of time to learn everything I need to know before he leaves.

I think that’s about all the news for now. It’s only 6:30 here, but I’m tired and it’s dark outside, so I may just go to sleep. It’s been a long few days with packing and planning and traveling…

Thanks for your prayers and support!
